Frequently Asked Questions About Business Water

THE GREAT BRITISH WATER COMPANY®

Business Water FAQs

  • The UK business water market is a deregulated market that allows non-household customers to choose their water supplier. Prior to the market opening in 2017, businesses and other non-domestic customers had to get their water from their local water company.

  • Any business or organisation that uses water for commercial or industrial purposes can change their water retailer. This includes charities, public sector bodies, and other non-domestic customers.

  • The deregulated water market provides businesses with more choice and greater control over their water supply. By allowing competition between water retailers the deregulation is designed to provide choice and generate competition between retailers.

  • Switching your water supply can be complicated and time consuming, at Great British Water we will help you compare prices and find the best deal. Once you have chosen a new water supplier, we will take care of the renewal or transfer of your contract from start to finish.

  • Water prices are set by the regional wholesaler in your area who must have authorisation from OFWAT, the regulator, to charge those prices. Retailers’ prices vary based on the water you use, location of your supply and services included in the water supply. We will ensure you are paying the best price for your supply.

  • If you move premises, we will need to inform your water retailer. They will then arrange for the supply to be transferred to your new premises and out of your old premises, this is part of the service we provide and will manage this for you.

  • The UK water market is regulated by Ofwat, the Water Services Regulation Authority. Ofwat is responsible for ensuring that the market is competitive, efficient, and delivers value for customers.
